Castelo de Palmela
Palmela Castle was seized by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 and fully reclaimed by D. Sancho I. It served as the official headquarters of the Order of Santiago from 1443 until its demise in 1834. Since 1910, the fortress has been designated as a National Monument. The castle's geographical location provides for a strategic domain that includes a portion of the Sadino estuary, a slope of the Arrábida mountain range, and the adjacent plains that divide it from the Tagus. This site was previously quite important due of the linkages and communication opportunities developed with the nearby Tagus and Sado lines castles.
Parque Natural da Arrabida
The Arrábida Natural Park is a biogenetic reserve on the Setbal peninsula, spanning the towns of Palmela, Setbal, and Sesimbra, with the maximum altitude at Pico do Formosinho, 501 meters above sea level, in the Setbal region of Portugal. It stretches about 35 kilometers from Arrábida, passing through various mountains and natural wonders, including the Serra do Louro, Serra do Risco, Serra de So Lus, Serra dos Gaiteiros, Serra Longa, Serra de So Francisco, and Serra itself.
Lapa de Santa Margarida
At the base of Serra da Arrábida, there is a natural cave with an exquisite 17th century church within. The Lapa de Santa Margarida is securely hidden and, while being close to the Portinho da Arrábida, is only accessible to those who know where to search.
