Traditional Cheese Farm
Before heading up the hill to the top of Serra da Estrela, we'll make our first stop at a traditional cheese farm where you'll learn about the production process of the incredible cheese made from the milk of goats and/or cows raised in Serra da Estrela. You'll have the opportunity to taste the cheese paired with homemade bread and local wine.
Serra de Estrela
In both summer and winter, Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain in mainland Portugal, is a breathtaking natural wonder. At its highest point in Torre, it reaches 1,993 meters and boasts rare and stunning landscape beauty, with awe-inspiring mountain drops that offer moments of silence and communion with nature. Take the opportunity to discover the diversity of plants and birds or observe flocks of sheep herded by Estrela dogs from the breed named after the Mountain. You can also follow the course of some major Portuguese rivers from their sources: the Mondego at Mondeguinho, the Zêzere at Covão de Ametade and the Alva at the Rossim Valley are breathtaking places. Or you can admire glacier valleys at Loriga, Manteigas or Covão do Urso and Covão Grande. During the warmest months, take a refreshing break with the 25 Lagoon Itinerary. And in the colder months, Serra da Estrela is the perfect place to try skiing, snowboarding, sledding or ride a snowmobile. With several pistes and support infrastructure, and even synthetic snow pistes for skiing year-round, it's a unique experience you won't want to miss.
Largest Lake
The Lagoa Comprida, located at a high altitude, is the largest lake in the Serra da Estrela region and serves as the main water reservoir for the area. Its construction began in 1911, primarily for its hydroelectric potential. The dam, which can be seen from the street, is made up of granite blocks that were carried by glaciers and are called "traveling stones". A lithographic study of the stones revealed their origin and how they were moved by the glaciers. The lake is also known for being used as a training location for fly-fishing teams participating in the World Championships.
